Bethlehem (which means “house of bread”) is located about 6 miles (8.89 km) south of Jerusalem. The Bible refers to Bethlehem as the City of David. Both King David and his father, Jesse, were born in Bethlehem and the prophet Samuel anointed David to be the king of Israel in Bethlehem (1 Samuel 16:1-13). Matthew 2:1-11 and Luke 2:1-4 report that Jesus was born in Bethlehem, as was prophesied in Micah 5:2.
