Gamaliel the Elder or Rabban Gamaliel was a leading member of the Sanhedrin. Based on references to Gamaliel in the Talmud, some believe he was the president of the Sanhedrin but there is no question that he held a senior position on that court. Gamaliel also holds a reputation in the Mishnah for being one of the greatest Jewish teachers in history.
