Abraham had two sons, Ishmael and Isaac. Jacob was Abraham’s grandson through Isaac who had twelve sons, the most well-known probably being Joseph. Before Jacob’s last son was born, God changed his name to “Israel” (Genesis 32:28-29 and 35:10). As set forth in Matt. 1, Jesus’ lineage was through Jacob’s fourth son, Judah, whose line also produced King David, the son of Jesse.
