John was born in Bethsaida to Zebedee (a fisherman) and Salome. John and his older brother James (who were called the Sons of Thunder) were partners in a fishing business along with Peter and Andrew. John was an early disciple of John the Baptist but left John the Baptist to follow Jesus and became one of Jesus’ inner circle. He is also referred to as the “disciple whom Jesus loved”. John was the only disciple out of the remaining 11 original disciples who did not die as a martyr. However, he was exiled to the Isle of Patmos by Domitian who reigned from 81 – 96 A.D.
