Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and the second smallest planet of the 8 planets that orbit the Sun. Because iron oxide (aka rust) is so prevalent on the surface of the planet, Mars appears to be reddish orange in color and is often referred to as the “Red Planet.” Mars is much smaller than Earth with its total surface area roughly approximating the 30% of dry land which exists on Planet Earth.
