Nicodemus was a Pharisee and a member of the Sanhedrin. Nicodemus is mentioned in the Gospel of John on three occcasions: 1) John 3:1-21 records Nicodemus’ conversation with Jesus in which Jesus tells him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of heaven. 2) In John 7:45-51, Nicodemus reminds his fellow Pharisees who wanted to do away with Jesus that the law did not judge “a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does.” 3) Finally, John 19:38-42 reports Nicodemus helped Joseph of Arimathea prepare Jesus’ body for burial. According to Christian tradition, Nicodemus died as a martyr for his faith in Jesus.
