A paradox is something that appears contradictory on the surface but further consideration resolves the apparent contradiction. For example, Shakespeare’s statement in Hamlet that “I must be cruel to be kind” appears contradictory but further consideration reveals that sometimes the kindest thing you really can do for someone is to be cruel.
