The word “atone” comes from the Hebrew word “kaphar” which means to cover or cancel. [See, Biblesoft’s New Exhaustive Strong’s Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary]. Christians refer to the atonement of Christ meaning Christ’s death on the cross atones for (covers, cancels) the sin of those who put their trust in Christ who are thereby reconciled with a holy and righteous God (Romans 4:7-8, 5:10)
