The High Priest was the chief religious official of Israel who also presided over the Sanhedrin. Aaron (Moses’ elder brother) was the first High Priest and all the High Priests that followed after him were his paternal descendants. Caiaphas was the Roman-appointed High Priest who presided over Jesus’ trial before the Sanhedrin which led to Jesus’ crucifixion.
