Johannes Kepler (1571-1630), a German astronomer and mathematician, was the first to correctly describe the laws that govern how planets move around the sun. Simply put, Kepler’s laws describe the pattern planets follow as they travel around the sun (i.e., an elliptical orbit), how fast the planets travel around the sun and how long it takes a planet to complete one revolution around the sun. These laws are commonly referred to as the laws of planetary motion.
