Neutrons are part of the nucleus (center) of an atom. The simplest atom (the hydrogen atom) has a nucleus with only one proton and no neutron. Most atoms have more than one proton and the neutrons in the atom work with the strong nuclear force to keep the protons together. Most atoms have about the same number of neutrons as protons but some have more neutrons than protons.
