Scientifically speaking, stars (like our Sun) are massive balls of hydrogen and helium which use thermonuclear fusion to produce light and heat. Nuclear fusion is a process in which hydrogen atoms are joined together to form helium and that process releases energy which is used by stars to produce light and heat.
